Life Score for the Hardcore

The music genre known as "punk rock" is as unique in its visual qualities as it is in its sound.

Artists such as Raymond Pettibon and Donna Parsons formed what came to be the punk aesthetic: a visual language of rebellion, frustration, and freedom from societal norms and expectations.

The featured image is Ed Colver's photograph that was used for the cover of Black Flag's iconic album "Damaged". The photo features lead singer Henry Rollins putting his fist through a mirror.

The effect was made by cracking the mirror with a hammer, while the "blood" on Rollins' wrist is a mixture of red ink and coffee.

The powerful image is a staple in punk rock history and has been described as "iconic" in the pages of Artforum. The image portrays a violent frustration with the self in a dynamic yet static fashion.

Rollins appears to be mid-punch, smashing his fist into the mirror. This rage is mimetic to the band's performance on the album: fast, loud, angry. However Rollins' eyes portray a sense of deep reflection. Which mirrors the subject matter of the lyrics of the album. (This contrast is a common motif within punk music)
